Juan Camilo ‘Cucho’ Hernandez played the first hour as Colombia Under-20s made a victorious start to their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over hosts Poland.
The Hornets striker, who has just completed a second season on loan at Huesca, was replaced by Luis Sandoval on 60 minutes; the substitute doubling Colombia’s lead in injury time at the end of the contest after Ivan Angulo had opened the scoring in the 23rd miunute.
The 20-year-old is one of the most-highly rated talents at the tournament, but went into it after scoring just four La Liga goals in a total of 34 league apperances as his loan club made an immediate return to the Segunda Division.
However, two of those were scored on the biggest stages in Spanish football – at Barcelona and Real Madrid – while ‘Cucho’ also netted twice on his debut for the senior Colombian team in a 3-1 friendly victory over Costa Rica in October.
Colombia’s next game is on Sunday against Senegal, who beat Tahiti 3-0 in their Group A opener.
