Watford's unfortunate record against teams from the top six continued on Monday night with a home defeat to Arsenal.

A madcap two minutes saw the Hornets first concede a shambolic goal before captain Troy Deeney was sent off for an off the ball incident with the Gunners' Lucas Torreira.

Here's how we rated their individual performances:

Ben Foster - 5

Although he made some good saves throughout the game to keep the score down to one, he gift-wrapped Pierre Emerick Aubameyang with the chance to score the game's only goal with a huge uncharacteristic mistake.

I'm not sure we will ever understand why he took so much time to try and clear the ball under such pressure from the Arsenal striker, but in the end it proved costly.

Daryl Janmaat - 7

As the Hornets tried to claw their way back into the game from the most difficult of circumstances, Janmaat put himself at the heart of almost everything good that they had to offer.

He was a nuisance going forward on the right and Arsenal really struggled to deal with him. However, he lacked that final bit of quality required to set up chances, while he's not always willing to get back and defend after an attack breaks down.

Christian Kabasele - 6

This wasn't the easiest game for Kabasele to return to the starting lineup for, but he didn't perform too badly.

Several misplaced passes and lazy challenges frustrated those watching in the stands, while he looked a bit lost as he occasionally made his way forward to try and even out the numbers following Deeney's red card.

Craig Cathcart - 7

After almost scoring an equaliser when his shot was tipped onto the post by Bernd Leno, Cathcart looked calm and assured in defence and prevented several threatening moves from materialising.

He showed his reliability at the back and adapted to the circumstances with a cool head, showing why he is such an important player for Watford.

Adam Masina - 7

After a handful of ungainly performances this season, Hornets fans would have been forgiven for expecting Masina to be wholly aquiescent in any Arsenal victory.

However, he looked an almost different player and put in a good enough shift to suggest there might be a decent left back in there after all.

He was also very unlucky not to score as his long range effort crashed back off the crossbar.

Kiko Femenia - 6

The full-back has been pushed forward on a number of occasions now this season and does not look out of place when he's put there.

He was substituted early on in the second-half, but prior to that he had caused some concern for Arsenal on the right, although as with Janmaat before him, he lacked that final bit of quality to really put Arsenal under any real duress.

Etienne Capoue - 7

Despite having a numerical disadvantage, the Hornets still controlled the game from the centre of the park.

Capoue looked strong and worked tirelessly, leading his team by example in Deeney's absence and was really unfortunate to see his well-struck free kick tipped around the post by Leno.

Abdoulaye Doucoure - 7

Like Etienne Capoue, Doucoure put in an impressive shift to help dominate play in midfield.

He managed well with Arsenal's midfield who looked lightweight in comparison to Watford's and linked up play from the back to the wide men consistently.

Will Hughes - 6

While there were impressive moments from Hughes, I can't help but feel the circumstances got the better of him.

He misplaced a couple of key passes in strong attacking positions, regularly delayed shots around the area and made a number of unwieldly fouls that resulted in a yellow card. Not his night.

Andre Gray - 6

With no Deeney or Deulofeu, Gray had a chance to show why he should be starting every game and his effort on the night could not be faulted.

However, despite a spirited display, his first touch let him down regularly, sometimes in great positions in front of goal.

Troy Deeney - 3

After the game Watford head coach Javi Gracia said that Deeney owed him no explanation for his actions after he was sent off in the 12th minute of the game.

However, I'm not sure all Watford fans will feel the same.

After going behind through a calamitous goal, Deeney should have been the one to step up and drag his side back into the game. Instead, he gave Craig Pawson a decision to make with a really silly off the ball collision and it ended up costing his team dearly.

With 11 men on the pitch, there was definitely something for Watford to get from that game, now they are without their captain for some important matches with the race for seventh closer than ever.

SUBS

Isaac Success - 5

If getting into good positions was all that was required to be a footballer, Success would be fairly decent.

However, the more mundane aspects of the game, like passing the ball and not being offside are things he really seems to struggle with in the Premier League.

He looked out of his depth and failed to make an impact once again.

Ken Sema - N/A
