Watford legend Duncan Welbourne has died, aged 78.

The full-back spent more than a decade with the club after signing from Grimsby Town in 1963 for a fee of £1,300 and was inducted into the Hornets’ hall of fame in 2011.

He was perhaps best known for his consecutive league appearances record for Watford, after he featured in 280 matches back-to-back.

Welbourne sits fourth on the club's all-time appearance list, having turned out for the Hornets on 457 occasions, during which he scored 25 goals.

A statement on the club website reads: "Watford Football Club are deeply saddened to learn that club legend Duncan Welbourne passed away this morning, aged 78.

"Our thoughts are with Duncan's family and friends at this difficult time."
