Helen Freeman and the Great Britain Women’s wheelchair basketball team have been nominated for the Team of the Year at the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards.

The nomination comes after Watford-born Freeman and her teammates secured a silver medal at this year’s World Championships in Hamburg.

The young squad, whose average age was 23, delivered a superb display of wheelchair basketball in Germany where they won five of their six matches in the qualifying stages before beating the host nation, who were Paralympic runners-up, in the semi-finals to win silver.

Having finished fourth in Rio and claimed bronze at the European Championships, they squad became the first British women’s team to reach a major final in the silver and the first to win global silver.

The winner of the Team of the Year Award will be decided through a public vote. Freeman and her teammates can be voted for via https://sportswomenoftheyear.co.uk.awards
