Watford slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat against West Ham United as goals from Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic inflicted Javi Gracia’s first Premier League defeat.

The Hornets were off colour throughout the clash at London Stadium and failed to replicate the form shown in their Monday night win over Chelsea.

United were the better side throughout and Watford were sloppy in defence and toothless in attack as they slipped to within five points of the drop zone.

The victory takes West Ham level on points with the Hornets ahead of a two week break from action.

Here’s how the Hornets rated at London Stadium.

Orestis Karnezis – 7

Harrow Times:

Was the main reason Watford remained in the game for so long and made a number of smart stops in the first half. He did, however, spill a powerful cross in the build up to United’s second.

Adrian Mariappa – 6

Went close to scoring after forcing a stop from Adrian as he rose highest to connect with a header at a corner. Looked composed in defence throughout.

Sebastian Prödl – 6

Like Mariappa the big Austrian looked calm in the centre of defence and coped with all that came his way.

Jose Holebas – 5

Put in a few dangerous set-pieces and is getting to grips with an unfamiliar centre-back role.

Panicked with a wild clearance which cannoned back off a West Ham man and allowed Arnautovic to seal the points with United’s second.

Daryl Janmaat – 4.5

Janmaat doesn’t do shades of grey. On Monday he was superb against Chelsea, but looked a shadow of that player at London Stadium.

Offered little going forward and was beaten time and time again by Michail Antonio.

Abdoulaye Doucouré – 5.5

Another player who was nowhere near the standards set on Monday and struggled to have an influence on proceedings.

Gave the ball away on a number of occasions and a misplaced pass put Hernandez through on goal in the second half.

Etienne Capoue – 5.5

Harrow Times:

Has looked like a man reborn under Javi Gracia but was off-colour in the heart of Watford’s midfield. Put himself about with some tough tackles but didn’t do enough going forward.

Marvin Zeegelaar – 4

Had a torrid afternoon and repeatedly gave away possession. Lost track of Hernandez for the West Ham opener and was given the run around by the Irons attack.

Gerard Deulofeu – 6

Did his best to influence matters going forward and always showed for the ball. Tried to do too much at times and held onto possession to the detriment of his side.

Troy Deeney – 5.5

Did his best to compete at the point of the Watford attack, but lost out to United’s defenders on multiple occasions. Struggled with an ankle injury in the week and looked off the pace.

Richarlison – 5

Barely got involved in the game and lacked attacking influence. Was taken off for the third game running by Gracia.

SUBS

Roberto Pereyra – 6.5

Harrow Times:

Was Watford’s best attacking outlet for the 36 minutes he played and got the Hornets playing on the front foot. Put in a number of dangerous crosses and Watford looked better for his introduction.

Dodi Lukebakio – 5.5

Given 15 minutes for his debut and looked somewhat at odds with the pace of the Premier League.

Andre Gray – N/A

Given less than 10 minutes to make an impact.
