A proposal to build nearly 200 flats on the site of a car showroom is up in the air after it was withdrawn from a planning meeting.

The plans for the Glyn Hopkin site in Lower High Street in Watford were due to be discussed on Tuesday evening by Watford Borough Council’s planning committee.

But chairman Peter Jeffree announced applicant London Square had withdrawn the item from the agenda.

The application had been recommended for refusal by a council planning officer.

The proposal seeks to demolish the showroom and build 193 homes in an L-shaped building rising to nine storeys and a smaller four-storey building, with 24 parking spaces.

London Square says it wants to turn the busy commercial location into a “thriving” residential community.

The application was up for refusal due to concerns about design, size, impact on neighbours, flooding, and highways.

A spokesperson for London Square could not comment further at this time about why the application had been withdrawn from the agenda.
