Saturday 6 August 2022 will see some of the best paratriathletes from around the world head to South Wales to swim, bike, run at Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea with the route they’ll be racing now revealed.

This is the first standalone race of this level to have taken place in Britain and is one of only three of its kind taking place globally in 2022.

Elite paratriathletes at the top of the sport will race through Swansea, with today’s announcement revealing where the action will take place and naming the city’s SA1 Waterfront as the hub for the event.

Swansea Council cabinet member Roberts Francis-Davies said:

“It’s exciting that Swansea’s World Triathlon Para Series route has now been announced.

“The route will showcase the city’s exceptional bay-side environment and I know that local people will give the event a warm welcome.”

British Triathlon CEO, Andy Salmon, added: “Releasing the routes is an exciting moment because it really connects the best athletes from around the world to the local city and people ahead of the event.

“The team have worked really closely with Swansea Council and local stakeholders to create a route that will provide the opportunity for the athletes to showcase swim, bike, run and para-sport, helping to give plenty of opportunity for residents and visitors to watch and cheer on these world-leading athletes.”

The swim will take place in the SA1 Waterfront with the athletes completing a 750m swim in the Prince of Wales Dock before heading on a 19km bike leg that will see them race from the Waterfront and through the Maritime Quarter before completing four laps along part of Oystermouth Road and returning to SA1.

To complete the race, the run course will lead from the event hub and take athletes on a three lap 5km run encompassing King’s Road and Langdon Road and return towards University of Wales Trinity St David’s SA1 Campus where the finish line will be.

Claire Cashmore, Paralympic medallist and world and European Champion who sits on the Board for the Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea, said: “I am super excited to race at a World Series race on home soil and I am hoping lots of people will come and watch.”

“We’re delighted to be hosting Britain’s first standalone event of this nature; the excitement of welcoming the world’s best paratriathletes here is mounting.

“The event’s impact on the city will be significant, with strong opportunities for local residents to get involved.

“There’ll also be a strong local legacy thanks to the week’s Para Sport Festival in Swansea and the Welsh Triathlon’ school activities.”

This year’s event is the first of a three-year plan to bring the event to Swansea as part of British Triathlon’s Major Event Strategy through to Paris 2024 Paralympic and Olympic Games.

Claire Cashmore added: “I was lucky to compete at Leeds last year where British Triathlon did a fantastic job, but I think Swansea is going to be even better.”
