South Londoner’s are being warned to only travel if “absolutely necessary” during the train strikes starting today.

People across south London and Kent should expect severe delays on all Southern Rail trains, as well as Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern services.

Those travelling on the underground should also expect disruption as TfL are also expecting Tube strikes today (June 21).

The nationwide strike, held by RMT members of Network Rail, is being held from Tuesday, June 21 to Sunday, June 26.

Trains will be operating with limited opening hours starting from around 7.15am and will finish in the late afternoon.

There will be no alternative travel outside of these amended hours, so passengers are being told to check their first and last trains carefully.

A spokesperson for Southern Rail said: “As this Industrial Action is affecting the whole country, we will be unable to provide alternatives such as replacement buses and ticket acceptance with other local rail and bus operators.

“We recognise that it will be very difficult to travel and our advice, regrettably, is to travel only if your journey is absolutely necessary.”

There will only be two trains per hour running between the following stations:

  • London Victoria and Brighton
  • London Bridge and Brighton
  • London Bridge and Gatwick Airport
  • London Bridge and Three Bridges
  • London Victoria and Sutton
  • London Victoria and Epsom Downs via Selhurst
  • London Victoria and West Croydon via Crystal Palace
  • London Bridge and Tattenham Corner

These trains will be running a reduced service, calling only at certain stops so check carefully before travelling.

Gatwick Express services will not run at all on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

First class has been scrapped on all Southern train services running during the strike period as any available services are expected to be extremely busy.

The Tube strikes will also cause most TfL and national rail services to be either severely disrupted or not running at all.

On Tuesday, June 21 Tube passengers are being warned not to travel and if you have to travel then complete your journey before 6pm.

On Wednesday, June 22 Tube passengers are being told to avoid travelling before mid-morning and expect severe delays.

Buses, the DLR and any other services which are running will be extremely busy with queues to board.

Some DLR services from stations also served by the Tube may have to close.

There will also be strikes during the night on Friday and Saturday on the Central, Jubilee and Victoria lines.

Roads are also expected to be much busier than usual so make sure to allow more time for your journey and consider walking or cycling if you can.
