People in Wiltshire are being asked to get their running shoes ready for the popular Corsham 10K and help raise vital funds for the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group.

This year’s race is due to take place on September 26 and more than 1,100 people have already entered.

Many of those taking part had originally signed up to enter the April 2020 race and subsequent rearranged races, which were postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Alongside this year’s 10K race, which will start at Corsham Town Football Club in Lacock Road there will also be a fun 2K run for children aged under 15.

The 10K race, organised by the Corsham Running Club, is the biggest event of its kind in Wiltshire and is approaching its 40th anniversary.

Race committee member Alex Fogwill said: “We are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile local charity as a key official beneficiary. Many of those running will also be raising funds in support of their favourite charities.”

BCUSG chairman Mike Taylor said: “Our fundraising activities had to be scaled back considerably during the pandemic, but we still need to raise tens of thousands of pounds for vital medical equipment for the cancer unit.”

The 10K race, which will also include a classic car procession, attracts runners of all shapes and sizes, ranging from seasoned club runners to first-time entrants who want the challenge of completing a 10K race.

Organisers say the event could not take place without the support of many local organisations including the Army, Navy and Air cadets, and three local primary schools who provide some of the 75 marshals needed to keep runners on the straight and narrow.

These are Corsham Primary School, Corsham Regis Primary Academy and Neston Primary School. In addition, the local football club provides space for the Race HQ, as well as many other volunteers who help out.

One of the entrants is the Royal Navy Field Gun team, made up of from military staff based at MoD Corsham, who will once again run part of the route on closed roads with their field gun.

Everyone who finishes the race will receive a special tee-shirt and medal, as well as bottle of beer from Box Steam Brewery.
