Budding snappers at a primary school have been getting picture perfect with expert tuition.

Pupils at Ireby Primary School have become so adept at taking photos that they are now exhibiting a range of their handiwork in an online gallery and selling prints to raise money for endangered species identified by the Lake District Wildlife Park.

This year the pupils have been under the guidance of award-winning Bassenthwaite-based landscape and portrait photographer Carmen Norman.

The professional snapper has been giving them expert tips as they’ve taken photographs on various field trips around the Lake District, such as Honister Slate Mine, the wildlife park and a host of other places.

The school has bought five cameras for them to learn things like the importance of shutter speed and aperture settings to get particular effects when taking pictures.

They were also been shown how to edit and publish the images that they have taken.

Michael John, headteacher, said: “At the start of term Carmen Norman started working with the children.

“The topic was all about nature and it helped thing like working together as a team.

“We were given help to buy the cameras by a local charity.

“These are skills that feed into the academic side as well, it feeds into everything they do really.

On Carmen’s website it states that: “Carman is an award-winning landscape and portrait photographer based in the Lake District who provides landscape photography workshops and courses, studio photography, weddings and family lifestyle photoshoots.”

The school announced the launch of the gallery on Thursday. Prints up to 80cm can be ordered off the website. Prices start at £2 for a 5in by 7in print, there is an additional charge for postage.
