SIX TONNES of deadly material was dumped on the roadside.

Wealden District Council was forced to close Harts Lane for four days to clear the asbestos and is now hunting the culprits.

Officials believe a vehicle "larger than a ford transit tipper" and "quite possibly a panel vehicle or a skip" was used to dump the material on the evening of October 9.

Pictures from the scene show the hazardous material - a carcinogen that causes mesothelioma - scattered across the road in Hartfield before it was cleared by a specialist team.

The Argus:

Authorities said it cost an estimated £2,500 to remove.

A spokesman for Wealden District Council said: "Did you notice any asbestos being transported in and around the area on October 9?

"Have you noticed a large amount of stockpiled asbestos suddenly disappear? The asbestos was from more than one building.
