A CARE HOME resident who suffers from Parkinson’s disease has stunned fellow residents and staff with his works of art.

John Martin has been brightening up the walls at Sovereign Lodge care home in Eastbourne with his colourful canvas paintings.

The 81-year-old has created more than 60 artworks since moving to the home in July, after he had to take a break from his hobby due to the impact of Parkinson’s disease.

With the support of the home’s activities coordinator Tracy Wenham, John has rekindled his passion for art and found “solace and relaxation” in the process of painting, which helps him to forget about his disease.

John said: “I’m pleased to have returned to painting.

“It gives me pleasure in achieving things and people say lots of nice things about the finished results.

“I want to put my Parkinson’s to the back of my head, and painting helps me do that.”

Many of John’s pieces, which are inspired by his own memories, books and nature, are now displayed throughout the home.

He has also recently been giving lessons to other residents and inviting them to help him to create the paintings.

John said: “Some of the ladies here have dementia and I try and involve them in my painting by giving them parts to complete.

“I enjoy helping them and it’s lovely seeing the smiles on their faces.”
