Planners will debate the proposed installation of a 20-metre tall 5G mast will be among the items discussed by next week.

Harrow Council’s planning committee will assess plans to erect the monopole in Elizabeth Gardens, Stanmore, when they meet on Wednesday (September 2).

Objections have been raised surrounding the height of the structure, and its impact on the surrounding area.

However, council officers explained 20 metres is the minimum height to allow for 5G services and “the limited visual intrusion this causes would be significantly outweighed by the public benefit of 5G provision in the area”.

Others claim the mast could have negative health consequences, since the safety of 5G is “still to be ascertained”.

Officers noted that the committee can only judge the proposals on planning grounds and pointed out the applicant has included a statement outlining its commitment to non-ionising radiation protection.

The packed agenda also includes plans for a new three-storey building made up of seven flats in Pinner Road, and a floor extension to a building in Edgware to provide eight more flats.

Planning officers have also recommended the committee refuse plans for a development at The Hive, the home of Barnet Football Club.

The applicant hopes to create a four-storey building housing a hotel, medical facilities, student accommodation and a sporting higher education centre.

However, officers suggested it is “inappropriate” in planning terms based on its height and design and the impact it would have on the area.

The meeting, which will be available to view online, starts at 6.30pm.
