Alarming figures show coronavirus infection rates have increased in most London boroughs.

Seventeen of the capital’s 32 boroughs have higher infection rates in the past seven days than they did the week prior, figures from Public Health England show.

In Harrow, the number of cases has doubled in seven days, rising to 8 per 100,000 people in the seven days to July 31.

In Barnet and Redbridge the infection rates are also significantly up, from 5.6 to 8.7 and 5.3 to 7.6 respectively.

Waltham Forest was one of two boroughs to record the same rate as before, at 3.3, while Hillingdon saw its rate fall from 4.9 to 3.9.

In Barking and Dagenham the number of cases more than trebled, rising from 4.7 to 14.6.

Hackney now has the highest infection rate in London, with 20.1 cases per 100,000.

These figures still lag behind some of the country's Covid-19 hotspots such as Blackburn with Darwen where an infection rate 77.9 per 100,000 was reported.

If cases continue to rise the government may move to implement its Contain framework which would restrict movement between areas if necessary.

Measures may include imposing restrictions on movement of people including requirements to stay at home or restrictions on entering or leaving certain areas.
