People in Harrow have been asked to give their opinion on how its streets can be made more attractive to cyclists and pedestrians after the council secured almost £500,000 worth of funding.

Harrow Council is consulting with residents on how £495,000 from Transport for London (TfL) could be best used to encourage active travel.

It comes after local authorities were encouraged to bid for funding from both TfL and the Government to promote healthy transport once restrictions associated with Covid-19 are relaxed.

The council explained that it intends to use the money to create several low-traffic neighbourhoods, including on roads near schools.

There are also plans to make streets safer for those traveling by bike or on foot and the council has invited those living in the borough to share how this could be achieved.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, responsible for the environment at Harrow Council, said: “This is fantastic news for our residents who have spent the last few months taking up more active travel and exercise through walking and cycling.

“With the pandemic still here, it is so important that we do everything we can to help residents continue active travel and maintain social distancing.

“So, over the next few weeks, we will be consulting and sharing more information on our plans to introduce these new measures.”

The council also hopes to secure further funding from the Department for Transport to implement new cycling initiatives throughout the borough.
