A north-west London Conservative MP is among those calling for Dominic Cummings to resign after he broke lockdown rules.

David Simmonds, who represents Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, said the prime minister’s senior adviser should “step down”.

He added that this is a view shared by many of his constituents and he would “welcome an independent investigation” into the situation.

Boris Johnson’s top aide drove 260 miles to his parents’ home in County Durham after his wife became ill in late March.

He said he acted “reasonably and legally” and the prime minister, as well as several cabinet members, defended his actions.

But Mr Simmonds said: “Whilst the facts of Mr Cummings’ situation are disputed and there are ongoing investigations, it is important in my view not to engage in trial by media.

“However, I have conveyed the strength of feeling locally to relevant colleagues and my own view, through the appropriate channels, that Mr Cummings should step down.”

He added that the lockdown period has made “enormous demands of everyone” and that people have been following rules laid down by the Government to help “save lives”.

More than 30 Tory MPs are said to have called on Mr Cummings to resign, with Douglas Ross quitting his role as Scotland Office minister in protest.

According to the results of a YouGov poll released yesterday (May 26), 70 per cent of Brits think Mr Cummings broke lockdown guidance and 59 per cent believe he should stand down.

But other politicians have defended him, with former Harrow Council leader and current leader of Greater London Authority Conservatives Cllr Susan Hall saying he has no need to apologise.

Conservative MP for Harrow East Bob Blackman was contacted for comment.
