A Brent councillor is under investigation by the Labour Party after he shared an anti-Semitic video in a residents’ WhatsApp group.

Cllr Aslam Choudry, who represents Dudden Hill ward, posted a video to a local support group that suggested America is controlled by a “Jewish lobby”.

The incident, which was reported by The Jewish Chronicle, was flagged up by several members of the WhatsApp group and was raised with the Labour Party.

It was reported that Cllr Choudry apologised to the group and said he posted the clip by mistake.

In a Facebook post, he said: “As you may have seen reported in the media, I recently shared an anti-Semitic video in a WhatsApp group.

“This video promotes appalling antisemitic tropes falsely claiming that Jewish people control America. This is not only untrue, it is racist and unacceptable.

“I am so deeply sorry for sharing this link. I shared the link by accident and when colleagues pointed out that it was an extremely offensive video, I deleted it and apologised.

“I am so sorry for the hurt and offence I have caused and I will be seeking to undertake training on anti-Semitism.”

In the video, a discussion published by Real Face Media, it is suggested that a “Jewish lobby” that is free from criticism is controlling the US.

One of the presenters says: “That tells you who controls the country.

“We are breaking the taboo. You are not allowed to discuss the power of the Israeli lobby in America.

“It’s proof right there, that’s who is controlling free speech in this country.”

A spokesperson for Brent Labour said: “We treat all complaints of anti-Semitism with the greatest severity.

“While the Labour Party investigation is ongoing there will be no further comment, pending the outcome of the inquiry.”
