A “kind-spirited” maternity assistant at Northwick Park Hospital has died after contracting Covid-19.

Elma Cavalida, 49, who worked at the Harrow hospital since arriving to the UK in 2010, died last Sunday (April 26).

In a GoFundMe page, her husband Vikas Deshwal explained that the maternity assistant contracted the virus while at work and “soon became so unwell to do the job she loved doing”.

She was admitted to Barnet General Hospital on April 8 after her symptoms began to flare.

Her husband said: “She was a true fighter, when I last saw her in the ICU on Saturday night, she was clam and quiet with tears in her eyes.”

In an exclusive interview with Metro, Mr Deshwal explained that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in mid-February which required at least a year-and-a-half of treatment.

Since the diagnosis, she decided to continue working at the hospital until she stared her chemotherapy in late-March.

But the husband said that she came home with a fever after her last day of work, but at the time doubted it was coronavirus.

She was rushed to hospital on April 1 due to her high temperature, where she was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Her condition deteriorated within a week, and she was put into ICU on a ventilator on April 8.

Mr Vikas told the Metro: “Elma was not on the frontline.

“My opinion is that it is life and you can’t control it. The hospital tried their best, she was on maximum support, but nothing helped.”

The London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust have confirmed her death.

A spokesperson from the trust said: "She was known for her warmth, kindness and compassion, and for her true dedication to taking care of our future mums.

"Those who knew her well describe how she welcomed everyone who came into the unit with a smile.

"She would do everything in her power to help others - nothing was ever too much trouble.

"Our thoughts are with her friends and family at this time."

The trust are encouraging any staff members who need time away from work or additional support due to the death, to speak to their line manager.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support to support Mr Vikas and their three kids.

Over £5,000 has already been donated. To help support the family, visit the GoFundMe page here.
