This month’s council meetings in Harrow have been postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A Harrow Council spokeswoman confirmed there are no plans to hold meetings, despite a planning committee meeting scheduled for April 22.

It comes as local authorities across the country look to adapt to the ongoing situation, with the Coronavirus Act 2020 outlining how they should proceed in terms of public meetings.

Some councils plan to hold them remotely via video conference, where the press and public would be invited to attend.

This is the case in neighbouring Brent, where the council intends to hold three meetings in May.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said this is to ensure decisions can still be made that will “help ease any delays to projects, schemes and the wider impact on our local economy”.

Harrow will review the situation at a later date – at present, its annual full council meeting is planned for May 14, a planning meeting is scheduled for May 20 and a cabinet meeting will be held a day later.

Brent Council cancelled its annual meeting – which confirms councillor roles, including the borough’s mayor, for the new municipal year.

It means Cllr Ernest Ezeajughi will continue in his role as Mayor of Brent for the time being.

Any replacement appointments will be made at a future full council meeting, though the council has powers to make changes before then if necessary.
