Councils in north-west London are promoting extra support networks for those at risk of domestic violence during a time when the public is advised to stay at home.

Brent Council urged anyone at risk to contact Advance in Brent if they have concerns about their wellbeing during the coronavirus lockdown.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “We are all being asked to self-isolate to protect our communities. But we know that for some people, home won’t feel like a safe place.”

She added that domestic violence does not just cover physical abuse, it could be “humiliation, bullying, threats, withholding money, or stopping people from contacting friends and family”.

The council is encouraging as many people as possible to share the advice around domestic violence on social media and through word of mouth.

Harrow Council explained that its domestic violence service is operating as normal and encouraged anyone at risk to contact Hestia if they have been forced to isolate with abusive partners or family members.

Last month the Government imposed stricter measures on when it is acceptable to be outdoors.

They include only leaving the house for medical needs, to buy essential food items, for exercise once a day or if it is necessary for you to get to work.

However, home secretary Priti Patel announced that victims are permitted to leave their homes during the lockdown to escape abuse.

Advance in Brent can be contacted on 07398 454898, while Hestia can be reached at idva.harrow@hestia.org or on 020 8868 5893.

Both councils reminded people that if anyone is in immediate danger from domestic abuse, they should call 999.
