Firefighters rescued six people as they battled a flat fire at a busy road.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Alexandra Avenue in Harrow today (February 10) at 11.34am.

Firefighters found part of a flat on the ground floor of the three-storey block to be alight.

Crews from Northolt, Harrow, Ruislip and Wembley fire stations are at the scene and the fire was under control by 12.18pm.

Three people were led to safety from a first floor balcony and a further three people were lead to safety from a second floor balcony by firefighters using a ladder.

One woman was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
