Police tape off Co-op after reports of stabbing in Leeming Road

The Co-op in Leeming Road was taped off and guarded by police, while forensic officers were seen gathering evidence after an incident at 1.44pm today (Sunday).

Locals say a stabbing took place.

In a statement released just after 7pm, Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "We were called to an incident in Leeming Road, Borehamwood, at 1.44pm on Sunday, 19 January, where a 16-year-old male was being treated for an injury by paramedics and was subsequently transferred to St Mary’s Hospital.

"We are currently making enquiries, but it is believed that both parties were known to each other and this is being treated as an isolated incident."

An air ambulance attended the scene.

In a post at around 3.30pm, the police did say: “We are currently dealing with an incident in Leeming Road, Borehamwood, and would kindly ask you to please avoid the area at this time.”

At least four armed units responded to an emergency call from Leeming Road and have been spotted across the town in the hours since.

At 6pm, there was no police presence at Co-op.

Local councillor Michelle Vince Says she has been ‘fearing’ a stabbing in Leeming Road, after her and her Labour colleagues previously raised concerns about knife crime in the area. 

She said: ‘Firstly, our thoughts are with the boy who has been injured at this time.

“Last summer I said I was terrified that there was going to be a stabbing in Leeming Road. I’ve been fearing this. It’s a very sad day for Borehamwood.

“Myself, Cllr Jeremy Newmark, and Cllr Richard Butler are going to ask to meet the inspector as councillors this week.

"There were measures put in place previously to make Leemimg Road safer and we will ask for these again. We need a stronger police presence here.”

Police enquiries into today's incident are ongoing.
