Family and friends gathered to watch the lighting of a six-foot high Menorah - a nine-candle lampstand - at the city's clock tower as part of Chanukah.
More than a 100 people from the Jewish community attended the ceremony in St Albans town centre on Sunday (December 29).
It was to mark the Jewish festival of Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights.
The event was organised by the St Albans United Synagogue and invited newly-elected MP Daisy Cooper and the Mayor, Cllr Janet Smith.

Traditional Chanukah doughnuts were handed out to synagogue members.
St Albans United Synagogue minister Rabbi Daniel Sturgess said: “One of the central themes of Chanukah is of bringing light into the world.
“It is a recognition the world is a dark place and it is our responsibility to do what we can to make the world a lighter place.”
“It does not go unacknowledged that we are able to stand here and do this wonderful thing of lighting our Menorah in the presence of our MP, our Mayor and with the protection of the local police.
“We are so very appreciative of the support we receive from the wider community.”

Cllr Janet Smith said: “Providing opportunities such as this play a big part in bringing this about and it is a very good to note St Albans is the sort of place where we all can live amicably alongside each other.”
