Oxhey Jets ended a run of three straight defeats in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division as they fought back to claim a 1-1 draw away at Crawley Green.

A defensive error from a set-piece allowed Sam Holmes to poke Green into the lead nine minutes before half-time, but Jets secured a share of the points thanks to a far-post finish from Ashley Lewis, returning alongside Jude Bell, in the second half.

Jets were looking assured in defence in the early stages of the first half as Jamie Speer and Thomas Gibson worked well together, while midfielder Harry Beaumont was constantly putting in tackles and breaking up play in the middle of the park.

However, defence proved to be the downfall for the visitors shortly before the break. They had already been given some warning signs from set-pieces – one had landed the just the wrong side of the post and another crashed back off the underside of the bar. This time, the delivery was cleared to the edge of the box but when the follow-up shot was not gathered by the goalkeeper, Holmes was there to pounce on the loose ball and give the mid-table side the lead.

A half-time tactical change from Tim O'Sullivan brought about a much-improved display from Jets in the second half, and they were threatening an equaliser for much of the period, long before it did eventually arrive.

Lewis pushed forward from his defensive position and when a low ball was sent to the back post, he was there to slot home and level the scores.

Both sides pushed hard for a winner, Jets particularly looking to emulate last season’s late win over their opponents, but neither could capitalise on the opportunities they were afforded, and both had to settle for a point.

The result ends Jets’ losing streak but does keep them winless in all competitions since the end of October. They sit sixth in the table, with Crawley Green two points and three places behind having played an additional two matches to Jets.
