A busy route connecting Watford town centre and West Watford has now shut following a delay.

Merton Road is currently closed between Market Street and The Hornets.

It was supposed to be shut from Friday but the road remained open over the weekend.

There are several Affinity Workers at the scene but it does not look like the planned work has begun just yet.

Dozens of drivers are being caught out by the closure with vehicles turning around in Cassio Road at the junction of Market Street.

You cannot turn left coming out of Market Street - apart from access to St Mary's Road only.

Even though it is a no right-hand turn out of Market Street, it is the only choice drivers have.

We have approached the county council for clarification on this junction.

They are then being sent on diversion routes - either via the ring road for Wiggenhall Road, or Rickmansworth Road for Whippendell Road. These diversion routes are clearly signed.

Traffic is beginning to build in Upton Road, Marlborough Road, and Fearnley Street.

The closure in Merton Road at the junction of Market Street

As it stands, motorists can travel from Vicarage Road (hospital and stadium side) to Wiggenhall Road, or continue along Vicarage Road to the ring road - but this access could be blocked in the coming days.

Harrow Times:

This junction (The Hornets/Vicarage Road), is currently accessible round to Wiggenhall Road from Vicarage Road and Fearnley Street

The Merton Road closure will be in place until October 25.

After work in Merton Road is completed, Cassio Road will be shut between Market Street and Marlborough Road from October 27 to November 15.

Bus passengers should also remember that many services are going via King Street and not stop G in Market Street.
