People have been warned to look out for scammers pretending to be from Thomas Cook.

Across Hertfordshire the caller has been telling people about a refund for their holiday payment, and to do so required a bank card and details, including the three-digit card security code.

Hertfordshire Trading Standards is aware of the scam and has urged for people in the county to beware if they receive a suspicious unsolicited phone call.

A spokesperson from Trading Standards said: “This is a scam – no Thomas Cook employee will be calling those affected by the company collapse. Refunds will be issued by the Civil Aviation Authority, and these started being processed on September 30.”

Hertfordshire County Council say they have not received any direct complaints via Trading Standards but are working closely with their departments and sharing regional messages of the scam.

This comes after Thomas Cook went into liquidation last week after failing to find £200 million to avoid entering administration.

It means all bookings, flights and holidays with the 178-year-old travel agent have been cancelled.

Speaking about the closure of Thomas Cook, leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn said the executives had paid themselves “very handsomely and well”, putting at risk hundreds of thousands of pounds and jobs and the travel agent had not been run in a proper manner.

Mr Corbyn added: “I would say the Government should support the company to get through this present crisis and talk to the work force about how they think the company should be run.

“It’s those that have taken so much out of the company that has caused its collapse.”

Anyone who believes they have received a scam call should contact Trading Standards on 03454 040506.
