Delays in Watford town centre have almost cleared after an afternoon of absolute gridlock.

The ring road and Waterfields Way has been virtually at a standstill for much of the afternoon - although it remains unclear what caused the delays.

One person stuck in the queues said she had seen four ambulances try and weave their way through the stranded traffic but there were no reports of any incidents.

It may have been the new traffic light timings at the junction of the ring road and Clarendon Road, which caused the tailbacks.

County council traffic cameras showed the extent of the queues on the ring road.

Today's delays were not the result of football traffic either with Watford playing away from Vicarage Road this afternoon.

The ring road was solid from Stephenson Way round to Clarendon Road, with queues on Waterfields Way stretching back into Dalton Way and towards Bushey Arches.

Traffic began to clear in Waterfields Way at around 4.30pm with the situation on the ring road finally clearing by 5pm.
