A MAN has died after being hit by a lorry on the A19 southbound on Tuesday morning.

The major route was closed between the A689 Coal Lane, Seal Sands roundabout, Wolviston, and the A1027 Billingham Bottoms for around five hours after emergency services were called to the incident at 10.50am.

The man, who has not yet been identified by Cleveland Police, was a pedestrian. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Anyone who has dashcam footage or any motorists who saw the pedestrian prior to the collision is asked to contact PC Andy Lawson from Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit via 101 quoting quote event 120452.”

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway, however the northbound carriageway was closed to assist emergency vehicles. The northbound route reopened first at around 2pm, followed by southbound lanes at 3.30pm.

The crash affected traffic heading into Middlesbrough and motorists reported tailbacks in the area with delays of up to 20 minutes.
