A primary school pupil who impressed judges with her armed forces-related Christmas card was treated to a day of adventure at a military headquarters.

Elena Bencea, who attends Saffron Green Primary School in Borehamwood, was a runner-up in the Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant Christmas Art competition which was held in December and involved more than 800 children.

Elena's card featured several poppies in a snowy field accompanied by a message where she wished the UK armed forces a Merry Christmas.

The card was described as "striking" by covenant board chairman Cllr Terry Douris.

Elena's Christmas card design

Year 6 pupil Elena visited Northwood HQ where she spent the day sailing, shooting, and climbing.

Cllr Douris said: “Elena’s striking artwork was chosen by staff at Northwood HQ and shared with serving UK military personnel who are separated from their families over Christmas.

“We understand our annual competition provides enormous festive cheer to our serving military personnel who may be based in all corners of the world, far from families and friends. I hope Elena enjoyed a taste of the exciting activities provided by Northwood HQ.

“The experiences these families have enjoyed at Northwood HQ bring to life the Covenant aim of joining together military and civilian communities and we hope their trip will leave lasting memories.”
