Police continue to appeal for witnesses after playpark equipment was damaged in a fire.

Last week, the Observer revealed that Waterfields Recreation Ground near Watford town centre was targeted by arsonists in the early hours of May 28.

Between 4am and 4.30am, paper was set on fire and placed on top of a climbing frame. The blaze has caused extensive damage to the equipment and ropes which children use to climb have collapsed.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has described the incident as a "mindless act of destruction" an say £10,000 worth of damage has been caused.

Watford Borough Council, which looks after the park, says repairs could take weeks to complete.

Ward councillor Rabi Martins condemned the arson describing it as a "real shame".

PC George Lewin said: “This was a mindless act of destruction that has resulted in £10,000-worth of damage to a public amenity. I would like to reassure residents we are doing all we can to trace the individuals responsible.

“Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time? If so I would like to speak to you as soon as possible.”

  • Two boys aged 15 and 16 have been arrested on suspicion of arson not endangering life. They have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
