Oxhey Jets beat Leverstock Green twice in three days to improve their position in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and advance to the final of the St Mary’s Cup.

In the league game on Saturday, Sean Giordmaina scored the only goal of the game to keep Jets in ninth.

Green started the game better and struck the woodwork within the opening two minutes, but Jets were handed the opportunity to take the lead when Tom Gibson was brought down in the area, only to see George Hobson’s penalty stopped by the keeper’s legs.

Jets made a double substitution at half time, bringing on Giordmaina and Nick Kerley, and it paid dividends almost immediately when Kerley threaded the ball through for the former to thump in the game’s only goal.

The visitors looked to have grabbed a last-gasp equaliser late on but were denied by a stunning Matty Evans save, who managed to tip the ball onto the post before Scott Bonner cleared as the ball rolled across the goal line.

Jets held on though, and they closed the gap on Arlesey Town to just three points after their loss at home to Wembley.

Giordmaina was also on the scoresheet on Tuesday night as this time the Jets travelled to Green in the cup.

The teenager’s goal was followed by strikes from Henry Marku and Luke Jones to put the visitors in a commanding position, with Luis Brooker’s consolation for the hosts doing nothing to change the end result.

Tring Athletic’s lead at the top of the division was cut to just goal difference on Saturday as they lost 1-0 at sixth-placed Colney Heath.

The result ended a run of eight games unbeaten for Athletic, but their vastly superior goal difference to Hadley keeps them at the top for now.

Tring felt as though they should have had a penalty after only 11 minutes when a home defender handled the ball well inside the box, but the referee instead awarded a free-kick just outside the area, which came to nothing.

James Verney and Jon Clements later combined to set up Ashton Campbell, but his left-footed effort from inside the area went wide of the post.

Campbell then had a penalty claim of his own when he got to the byline and was bundled over, but once again the officials were unmoved and allowed play to continue.

A goalless draw looked to be on the cards going into the final 10 minutes until a hanging cross from Danny Fitzgerald deceived Pat Sinfield in the Tring goal, and he could only watch as it bounced in off the underside of the crossbar to hand the visitors all three points.

Bovingdon continued their march at the top of Division Two with a 4-1 win away at MK Galacticos.

Jamie Eames, Jordan Thurgood, Ryan Charles and Matt Standen all found the net to extend their lead at the top to 15 points.
