Police have issued additional safety advice to shop owners after a man died during a robbery at his newsagents.

Ravi Katharkamar died from a stab wound to the chest at Marsh Food and Wine, in Marsh Road, Pinner at around 6am on Sunday (March 24).

A man has since been arrested as police continue to investigate the incident.

Inspector Tanya Sprunks, who covers Harrow neighbourhoods, said: “This tragic incident has shaken the community and we are urging businesses to now take further precautions when open and closing their shops.

“To keep safe and try to minimise your chances of a robbery, there are a number of small steps that you can take, that are practical and cost effective.”

These include having more than one person open and close up, keeping windows as clear as possible and recording any suspicious incidents to local police contacts.

The police also suggest that shopkeepers only keep small amounts of cash in their tills and that, in the event of a robbery, they remain calm, only raise the alarm when safe to do so and remember as many details as possible about those involved.

Mr Katharkamar’s death has shaken the wider Harrow community, with several people paying tribute to the “down to earth, family-orientated” man.

An online fundraiser for his family has been set up and has collected almost £50,000.

Harrow Council has been working with the police to reassure the community and reiterate that it is “doing all it can” to keep people safe.

Cllr Krishna Suresh, responsible for crime and community cohesion at the council, said: “We are working closely with the police to help business owners to protect their premises better.

“If you spot anything suspicious or would like to find out more about advice on security and crime problems in your area, please call 101.”
