Northwood suffered a set-back in their hunt for a play-off place in the Bostik League South Central Division after losing 2-1 away at Ashford Town.

Zaied Sabti gave them the lead in the first half, but goals either side of the break from James Cottee and Gurkan Gokmen saw Ashford complete the turnaround.

The visitors went ahead in the 22nd minute when Dan Newton cut the ball back for Sabti, who fired into the roof of the net.

It took only 15 minutes for the hosts to respond, though, as Cottee latched onto James Beadle’s free-kick and headed home unchallenged.

Ashford, having looked lively at the start of the second period, took the lead on 50 minutes when Northwood squandered numerous chances to clear their lines, and Gokmen lashed in from the edge of the area to complete the turnaround.

Woods rarely threatened in the second half and their lack of creativity confirmed a 2-1 loss that sees them drop down one place in the table.

Meanwhile, Berkhamsted suffered their second loss against Yaxley this season as they were undone by a late goal in Evo-Stik Division One Central.

Dan Cotton’s penalty put Yaxley ahead before Matt Bateman pulled Berko level with a spot-kick of his own, but winger Matt Sparrow struck in injury time to win it.

The opening goal came midway through the first half when the dangerous Sparrow went down in the box under a challenge from Danny Murphy, and Cotton stepped up to fire home.

The visitors equalised late in the second half when Harry Scott was brought down, and the referee pointed to the spot again which allowed Bateman to step up and convert his 37th of the season.

As Berko looked to go and take all three points, though, they were caught out, and Sparrow struck the winner at the near post to leave the Comrades fifth in the table.
