Harrow Conservatives will call on their council to write to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, asking him to address the anti-Semitism scandal that has dogged his party.

The group has tabled a motion to be discussed at Thursday’s full council meeting, which urges Mr Corbyn to “take action to ensure anti-Semitism is taken seriously and properly dealt with”.

It points out the number of anti-Semitism complaints lodged within the Labour Party – “673 in the last ten months” – and the recent resignations of several MPs due to the matter.

They noted the council’s adoption of the “working definition of anti-Semitism” in 2017 but want further action to ensure that the issue is taken seriously.

At the same meeting, the Labour administration want the council to officially adopt the definition of Islamophobia given by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) of British Muslims.

It states: “As a diverse and vibrant borough, where Muslims make up over 12 per cent of the population, it is important that the council signals its seriousness in tackling all forms of hate and discrimination against residents, and members of wider society.”

According to the motion, there has been a “disappointing normalisation” in politics and the media of some forms of discrimination, including Islamophobia.

It comes after Sayeeda Warsi, the former Conservative party chair, called for an inquiry into Islamophobia in the party as she accused it of being in denial over the issue.

And Tory MP Bob Blackman, who represents Harrow East, came under fire after Hindu nationalist Tapan Ghosh – who has previously called for the UN to control the birth rate of Muslims – spoke at an event he hosted in parliament.

Mr Blackman defended Mr Ghosh’s appearance at the ‘Tolerating the Intolerant’ event, pointing out that it was focused on “hearing the voices of suppressed minorities”.

The APPG of British Muslims’ definition of Islamophobia includes, among other things: calling for Muslims to be harmed or killed or holding all Muslims responsible for crimes committed by a single Muslim or a group of Muslim individuals.
