An old factory site that will welcome a major housing project is set to undergo more redevelopment.
Harrow Council has approved another scheme in Headstone Drive, Wealdstone, which makes up part of the old Kodak factory site.
Its planning committee unanimously agreed to permit an extension to an office block at the site, which will grow from three to four storeys.
The scheme – which will see some of the building’s courtyard filled in – will also create 58 additional parking spaces.
Planning officers explained that the work would be in keeping with the surrounding area, including the proposed housing development.
They added that a Section 106 agreement is in place – including payments from developer Dandi Living to support a travel plan – to protect the area’s biodiversity.
While this scheme was unanimously approved, the regeneration at the site as a whole has come under scrutiny.
Conservative councillors have questioned the sustainability of the scheme and whether the region has the infrastructure to cope with up to 1,800 new homes.
They have also accused the Labour administration of agreeing to build “faceless tower blocks” there, which, they say, puts the borough at risk of becoming a “concrete jungle”.
The council has defended the proposals, pointing out that it is facing housing target pressures and must take this into account when reviewing development schemes.
