A PATNA man who threw vulgar abuse at police officers has been handed 120 hours of unpaid work.

Thomas Paton from Daharco Avenue demanded cops take their body armour off before shouting “square go” at them.

The 27-year-old was left humiliated at Ayr Sheriff Court on Tuesday, February 12 as his derogatory remarks, which included homophobic abuse, were read aloud by Depute Fiscal Ed Sheeran.

Paton kicked off at police on June 11 last year when they located him in connection to a separate incident. He was found at Carnshalloch Avenue in Patna. Two officers made attempts to stay with him while they obtained information but he quickly became aggressive and volatile.

Mr Sheeran told the court: “The accused was traced in relation to another matter. He told police ‘I’m not waiting’ and walked off. He continued to walk away and made derogatory comments at which time he was placed under arrest.”

Mr Sheeran went on to list the boorish insults Paton fired to officers - accusing them of having homosexual relations together and calling them monkeys. At one point, he yelled to one: “Away and pump your hand!”

Representing Paton, Mr John Gallagher told the court: “He was mortified to learn this was coming out in court. He is completely embarrassed and I think that speaks for his contrition.”

Paton has since served a spell in jail which Mr Gallagher explained has taught him a lesson. He added: “His time in custody has been a hard time as he has had no contact with his children since October. He really has struggled.

“This was a matter when he appeared from custody.”

Sheriff Mhari MacTaggart ordered Paton to 120 hours of unpaid work as an alternative to custody and part of a Community Payback Order under supervision for 18 months. Sheriff MacTaggart told Paton: “On this matter, I understand you are ashamed. You should be. You are 27-years-old, you should know better.

“This justifies a custodial sentence. That’s the position you’re in. You’re risking your liberty.”

Paton has 12 months to carry out his unpaid work.
