Beacons have been lit for the first time since the Olympics.

The beacons outside Waltham Forest Town Hall are alight this weekend to celebrate the Waltham Forest Borough of Culture launch event.

A eager-eyed resident noticed workmen attending to the tower lights and was saddened that the events had not been lit for other occasions such as the commemoration of the First World War.

Cllr Paul Douglas, Junior Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “The beacons on the Town Hall lawn, last used during the London 2012 Olympics, will be lit to mark the opening of our exciting Borough of Culture programme on Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 January.

"It’s just one part of our huge Welcome to the Forest event, a spectacular celebration of our wonderful corner of north-east London featuring local schoolchildren, musicians and artists.

"We can’t wait to welcome you to what’s sure to be the biggest party of the year.”

According to the council, the lights are only operated for special occasions.
