A “hotspot” for drug dealing and drinking is set for a “Christmas clean-up” to try and rid the area of criminal activity.

Harrow Council and the Metropolitan Police launched the joint initiative this week (Dec 17-21) to help tackle anti-social behaviour in Wealdstone.

There will be several programmes in place, including weapons sweeps, action against street drinking and fire safety advice.

Tanya Sprunks, Harrow neighbourhood inspector, said: “This Christmas clean-up before the start of the New Year will have a huge impact on Wealdstone.

“We’ve listened to residents’ concerns throughout the year and we want to make sure that everyone feels safe and secure throughout the holiday season.”

Police conducted a local survey for the week of action to ensure the scheme focused on people living and working in the area.

Insp Sprunks added that she hopes to see residents and businesses get involved by engaging with officers throughout the week.

At a public meeting earlier this year, many complained about the state of Wealdstone and urged authorities to pump more resources into tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.

Community groups have also organised events to try to “reclaim” parts of the town centre, which has gained a reputation as a place for drug-dealing and day-drinking.

Cllr Graham Henson, leader of Harrow Council, said the week will show that change is possible.

He said: “Our aim is to ensure that everyone feels safer in the area over the festive season and beyond.

“Residents have been feeding back to us and we have been listening to them, at our Wealdstone meetings.

“We are committed to making those changes that people have asked for and are working with our partners to make improvements to the area. Everyone is entitled to a peaceful and better community.”
