The Mayor of Harrow laid poppy wreaths at the graves of servicemen and women who bravely gave their lives during the First World War.

Councillor Kareema Marikar was joined by representatives of the Royal British Legion at both Wealdstone and Pinner Memorial sites to honour those who died in the Great War.

The annual event, held before Remembrance Sunday, promotes the work of the Royal British Legion and its Poppy Appeal.

The ceremonies were also attended by Her Majesty’s representative deputy lieutenant, Simon Ovens; Major Ed Dutton, 131 Commando Squadron; Squadron Leader Dean Gibson; Mrs Sandra Broad, president of South Harrow Royal British Legion Club; standard-bearers and members of the Royal British Legion.

Staff and pupils of West Lodge Primary School joined the mayor at the Pinner Memorial ceremony.

Cllr Marikar said: “It is an honour to represent the borough in this traditional laying of commemorative wreaths. We remember those who gave their lives 100 years ago and also celebrate what they fought for.

“Today, we are fortunate to live in peace and must spread this hope and love to people from all backgrounds and in all countries.

"To me, this is important in learning from the past and looking to the future. I hope to see many of you at the borough’s official Remembrance Day Service.”

A Remembrance Sunday parade and service will be held tomorrow outside Harrow Civic Centre at 10.45am.
