Brent Council is introducing a series of skips across the borough to help address the issue of fly-tipping.

The ‘community skips’ scheme gives people the chance to dispose of unwanted household items, including furniture, mattresses and small electrical goods.

A trial period will run over the next six weeks, with the skips open from 8am to midday on specific days.

They will be run by volunteers, and the council believes the programme is a positive step when it comes to keeping the borough’s streets cleaner.

Cllr Krupa Sheth, responsible for the environment at Brent Council, said: “I think this is a great initiative and a big thank you to the residents who are giving up their time at the weekend to man the skips.

“Although this is just a pilot, I'm really pleased to see the community getting together to show their love for their local areas and encouraging others to do the same.

“People will also have the chance to find out more about what happens to their waste and recycling, pick up tips on reducing waste and meet community groups who are active in their area.”

Those using the skips can get rid of up to five bulky items, or five black bags of rubbish – or a mixture of the two.

They will need to bring a form of identification, which can include a driver’s licence, utility bill or council tax bill.

Skips will be available in Ken Way, Barnhill – opposite Lidl – on November 3, and in Shaftesbury Avenue, Kenton, on November 17.

They will then make their way to Essoldo Way, Kingsbury, on December 1.

The council explained that the skips are for community use only – trade waste will not be accepted.

Asbestos, car tyres, oil drums, paint cans and fridges and freezers are also banned.
