An animal rescue centre inundated with “unwanted” kittens is urging people to neuter their cats.

The National Animal Welfare Trust on Tyler’s Way, Watford, said the number of kittens without a home has been higher than ever this year and they are now looking after more than 25 young cats.

Centre manager, Jackie de Friez, said: “We always have more kittens in our care during the summer months, but at the start of this month when things are usually starting to slow down, we had three new litters.

“We are seeing more and more abandoned kittens all desperately needing our help and support.

“The kittens that are handed into a rescue centre are the lucky ones, we have the vet support, socialisation and care needed to help them find loving new homes.”

Jackie added caring for each individual kitten can cost the charity up to £200.

The on-site vet nurse added: “Neutering really is the only way to prevent the number of unwanted and abandoned cats.

“Cats can become pregnant from four-months-old so it’s really important to get them neutered.”
