A new service station on greenbelt land will provide jobs paying “more than” the National Living Wage and be free of zero-hour contracts – according to the service operator.

Moto Hospitality Limited told the Watford Observer that although pay scales for individual roles will not be made public, it guarantees jobs at the Junction 20 M25 site it plans to build on will pay above the Government minimum.

Moto announced last week it would offer up to 200 jobs at the Kings Langley site if given the go ahead.

But the leader of Three Rivers District Council Sara Bedford has questioned Moto on its commitment to the Real Living Wage, which applies to over 18s.

Cllr Bedford said: “I’d like to know what type of jobs Moto will be offering. Will they be paying the Real Living Wage of £8.75 per hour, with enhancements for unsocial hours? Will there be opportunities for promotion and quality training? Will staff be placed on zero-hour contracts and expected to move between sites? What percentage of the jobs will be managerial?

“This area needs new jobs to be of good quality and to give the possibility of progression. We have a pool of skilled and enthusiastic people who deserve decent jobs.”

A spokesperson for Moto Hospitality Limited said: “If our proposal for a new motorway service area at Kings Langley is given the go-ahead, a variety of jobs, ranging from shift-based customer service assistants up to site managerial positions will be available.

“Pay scales applicable to individual roles will not be made public. However, all of Moto’s 5,000 staff are paid more than the National Living Wage of £7.83 an hour.

“Moto does not use zero-hours contracts.

“We would seek recruits for around 200 permanent jobs by using various channels, including any recommended by the local authority and by working with local organisations supporting people into employment.”

Moto added their policy of paying the National Living Wage also applies to those aged 18-20.

Plans to build on the site were mooted in 2015. The motorway service provider recently rekindled the proposal and although plans are yet to be finalised, the new service area could include a 100-bed hotel, a 1,000-space car park and shops and other facilities.

Moto Hospitality Limited will hold consultation events to discuss their plans for the greenbelt site on the following dates:

• October 24 between 9am-6pm at a pop-up kiosk in the upper mall of the intu shopping centre, Watford.

• October 24 between 4pm-8.30pm at Kings House Business Centre, Station Road, Kings Langley.

• October 25 between 2pm-8pm at Manor House Sports and Social Centre, Gallows Hill Lane, Abbots Langley.
