A new generation of construction apprentices are starting their careers on a development project.

Four new recruits will trade in their textbooks for hard hats as they begin an apprenticeship programme at the Lexicon site in Gayton Road, Harrow.

Abha Shrestha, Tyrone Boyefio, Jahvarn Smith and Reece Parekh, who all live in Harrow, will be learning their respective trades under the Fairview New Homes team, led by building director Stephen Brown.

Harrow Times:

Each apprentice will spend four days a week on site in conjunction with K10 Apprenticeships, and one day at college.

Abha, 24, said: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship, working towards being a full-time quantity surveyor in the construction industry.

“I find the job itself to be very interesting and the staff at Fairview make the experience so much more enjoyable because they are inclusive and make me feel like part of the team already.”

Tyrone, 22, said: “My apprenticeship is in plumbing and heating, so I have the opportunity to do something different every day on site which is keeping me on my toes.

“I’m doing much more hands-on work than I thought I would be, spending time with my supervisor who has been great with me, teaching me things thoroughly so I can see a job through from start to finish, and even supporting me with my college work.”

Jahvarn, 20, said: “I’m training to become an assistant site manager with Fairview, so I am working closely with the current leadership team at Lexicon who have been a big help to me.

“I’m learning so much in such a short space of time. I have even asked to come in on Saturdays, so I can gain as much experience as possible and because the Fairview way is to go the extra mile.”

Reece, 18, said: “I have only recently joined Fairview but already I feel like a valued member of the team.

“They have integrated me into a good group of people who have fun on site whilst taking their work very seriously, and that’s an approach I really admire.”

Fairview is building 230 new apartments at Lexicon.

Stephen said: “Apprenticeship schemes play a vital role in recruiting and training young people for skilled jobs in the construction industry and have proved to be the route to the top for several members of our workforce.

“We believe that, with a strong level of commitment and willingness to learn on the job, our apprentices will have every chance of enjoying successful and fulfilling careers.

“Our current crop of apprentices are wise beyond their years and have really hit the ground running, so we have high expectations for each of them as they progress with us.”
