A children’s charity and Harrow College are offering specialist training to help young people affected by mental health issues.

The Counselling Department at Harrow College in Lowlands Road, and children’s mental health charity Place2Be, will train counsellors who are interested in working therapeutically with children.

Place2Be, the children's mental health charity, provides in-school support and expert training to improve emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and staff.

Research has shown that three pupils in every classroom have a diagnosable mental health issue, and even more could be affected by challenges in their day to day lives.

A successful two day workshop, saw trainee counsellors secure placements in schools to support children who are dealing with bullying, bereavement, domestic violence, neglect and trauma.

Michael Lyons, a counselling coordinator and lecturer at Harrow College said: “The counselling work which the trainees do plays a vital role in the local community and we are now able to extend this into schools.

“Trainees find that the training changes them as people in ways which they had not expected and they value that growth. The change which their clients undergo is likewise life changing. It is now planned to make this a regular and integral part of our training.”
