A Harrow GP has formed a walking group to encourage people to exercise more.

Dr Nizar Merali, 63, says a little exercise can go a long way but admits the majority of his patients ignore his healthy living advice.

The frustrated doctor is now trying to inspire people into exercise by hosting a weekly walking group around West Harrow Park as part of the council’s borough-wide walking programme.

Nizar, who uses a treadmill three times a week to keep trim, said: “I’d say around 90 per cent of my patients would benefit from exercise as simple as walking to the shops or getting off a stop earlier on the tube.

“The problem is the majority don’t so I thought it was time to practice what I preach after 36 years with the NHS.”

He will host his weekly walks every Sunday from 9.30am, starting this Sunday.

“Everyone is welcome to join, and we’ll be taking it easy with a circuit of the park on the first week,” he added.
