A catering manager has apologised for serving a desert that contained pork gelatine in a Harrow school cafeteria.

The strawberry mousse served to children in Kenmore School yesterday contained a "small amount" of the product.

Naomi Touceda, chef manager for Pride Catering, said she had made a big mistake in not checking the ingredients listed on the tubs.

In a letter to parents she said: "It is with sincere regret I need to inform you that the strawberry mousse served today contained a very small amount of pork gelatine.

"I decided to try something new for the children and bought in some tubs of individual mousse and have made a very big mistake by not checking the ingredients listed on the tubs.

"This was only noted after service. To reiterate this pudding was not made on site.

"My sincere apologies to all of you for this error and please be assured this product will not be used again and only the Pride recipe for strawberry mousse will be used.

"I will be speaking to the head teachers of both schools to discuss a way of compensating the school community.

"Once again, I am truly sorry."
