Hundreds of people attended a deaf club’s Eid and Diwali party with live music and dancing.

Harrow United Deaf Club (HUDC) held the party at The Bridge, in Christchurch Avenue, Harrow, on Saturday, giving guests the chance to learn more about the Hindu and Muslim festivals.

Guests included Mayor of Harrow Councillor Ajay Maru, and Labour parliamentary candidate Uma Kumaran.

There was a performance from dancers of the Honey Academy and talks throughout the evening explaining the cultural history of the two religious events.

President of HUDC Asif Iqbal said: “It was fantastic for people to get together in a community spirit, to gain better understanding of both cultures.

“Many people said how much they enjoyed the whole event including socialising, children activities – making candles, having face painting and henna art.

“We strive for working together with local communities and gain better understanding of each faith and cultures, promoting positive attitudes for all.

“Special thanks should go to all of our speakers and committee members who worked hard to make the event a great success.”

Uma Kumaran said: “It was an absolute honour to be invited to this evening’s event. Harrow United Deaf Club is an organisation very close to my heart, and one that I am immensely proud to support.

“The hard work that Asif Iqbal and his fellow members have done in creating such a welcoming and warm group is a testament to the fantastic community we live in.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with them in the future.”

Cllr Maru said: “I have read all the stories about Harrow United Deaf Club and I must say that the club have had amazing achievements in the last five years.

"The club is an inspiration for many of us locally and across the country.

“We need to take away lessons from HUDC and share with other community groups. It is a positive role model that we need to take with us wherever we go.”
