This weekend marks the end of National Gardening week with a host of events at different locations across the country today, National Gardening Day, and over the weekend.

The Royal Horticultural Society launched the scheme five years ago and is now the country’s biggest celebration of gardening, with thousands of people, gardens, charities, retailers, culture and heritage organisations and groups involved.

The theme this year is Get Fit in the Garden to promote the benefits of keeping healthy through nature. As well as the physical benefits of gardening there is evidence that simply being outdoors and interacting with nature is hugely beneficial for our mental health and can help to reduce stress levels, often referred to as ecotherapy.

Events running over the next few days include building bee houses, parties, fairs, book signings and London’s Screen Archives will be visiting select locations including Valentines Mansion in Gants Hill with their KinoVan to display some of London’s most colourful gardens as recorded in film.
