Hertfordshire MPs have welcomed a “forward-thinking” autumn Budget that they say will help working families and businesses in the area.

Chancellor Philip Hammond presented his Budget to Parliament on Wednesday, which outlined the Government’s latest economic plan.

Some of the highlights included scrapping Stamp Duty Land Tax on homes under £300,000 for first-buyers and putting aside £3 billion to prepare Britain for Brexit.

The National Living Wage for those aged 25 and over will increase from £7.50 per hour to £7.83 per hour and £1.5bn will also be provided upfront to support the rollout of Universal Credit.

Richard Harrington, MP for Watford, said the Budget will “prepare people in Watford for the challenges they face and create new opportunities”.

He said: “We face many challenges over the coming months, particularly as we build a new relationship with the EU. But we do so from a position of strength. Britain's economy continues to grow, with unemployment at its lowest level for 40 years. We can see that in Watford with unemployment having halved in the last 7 years. But there's more to be done.

“That's why the Conservative Government is taking the necessary steps to ensure that Britain is fit for the future. We are building more homes than ever before, investing in our NHS, helping more young people get on the property ladder, supporting small businesses, raising wages, investing in our schools and helping savers.

“This is a budget that prepares us for the future. There are still many challenges ahead, but with these solid foundations, we can face them head on."

MP for Hertsmere Oliver Dowden added he was “pleased” the Budget will consider the Green Belt and infrastructure.

He said: “I know how difficult it is for people to be able to afford their first home. One of the biggest barriers is the amount of money you have to save for Stamp Duty. I’m really pleased we’re scrapping it for first time buyers up to £300,000 and removing it for that amount on purchases over £300,000.

“The further increases to Personal Tax Allowances and freezes in Fuel and Alcohol Duty will also help with the cost of living.

“One of the major issues that people raise with me is the importance of protecting our Green Belt and improving infrastructure, something I have pressed the Government over consistently. I am therefore pleased the Budget recommits to the Green Belt as well as providing additional resources for infrastructure.

“Overall it is a balanced and sensible package that supports hard working families and businesses and invests for the long term.”

David Gauke MP for South West Hertfordshire was also contacted for a comment.
