Ten locations where electric car charging points could be installed have been identified by Watford Borough Council.

A consultation is now underway to establish the level of interest from the local community in switching to cleaner, greener electric cars as an alternative to traditional fossil fuel-burning vehicles.

The proposed new locations will complement the chargers which already exist in council-owned car parks around the town.

Nascot Councillor Mark Hofman said he “fully supports” the introduction of electric car charging points to tackle air pollution in the town, including one proposed for Essex Road in his Nascot ward.

“Excessive air pollution linked to global warming is responsible for the premature death of 40,000 people each year in the UK. The council is encouraging alternatives such as the electric car in an attempt to limit harmful NO2 pollution in Watford, and this new charging point is something that I fully support,” he said.

“We have noticed strong growth in the electric car market and want to support the transition to more sustainable forms of transport in the shortest possible time.”

Watford Liberal Democrats - who have called for a total ban on the sale of diesel and petrol cars by 2025 - will consider new plans focused on combatting air pollution at a local level, including the introduction of charging zones, modifying speed humps, road layouts, traffic lights and potentially a scrappage scheme.

The consultation, which is split into five areas, runs until Sunday, October 8, and is available online at www.pclconsult.co.uk/watford
